The tiny story of the dream girl
Life is a multiple choice question. How would you choose to pursue dreams or settle for reality? After graduating in 2006, Shi Gaoqing resolutely went to Beijing with art dreams in mind. When she first went there, there was nothing in the studio; everything had to be arranged slowly. In order to save the cost of staying in the hotel, she calculated the arrival time of the morning flight and ran to the supermarket immediately after getting off the plane. When she finished buying the supplies she needed, it was already dark. With her hands on her back, standing on the side of the road waiting for the bus, she found that the winter in Beijing was really too cold, frozen in her bones, feeling useless wearing clothes-but she was very excited inside. The bus never came, but when she looked at the stop sign, she found out that the time for the last bus had passed, so she hurriedly stopped a taxi and went back.
At that time, Fifth Ring Road of Beijing was still very desolate, there were no streetlights, very dark, and there were very few vehicles on the road. The driver was very humorous, but Shi Gaoqing could feel the panic in his heart. For he kept turning his head to ask her where is the destination? How long would it be? Where was it? He wouldn’t like to go. In fact, she was also very scared at the time, and kept explaining to him, “It’s almost here. This is an art district. How can I get back here without a car on the road? Don’t be afraid, it’s really a place for painting…” Finally arrived, the driver looked at the gate of the art district and said, “Oh, there is such a place, it is too biased!” This is the beginning of the dream-chasing story; everything is so barren.
Love nature, love everything good
Although the road to dreaming was full of frights and bumps at first, fortunately, we all love beautiful things. Every creature in the natural world is a sacred individual, a creation of nature. Their beautiful eyes, and elegant, calm, timid or cute body movements are the expression of different faces of human beings. For Shi Gaoqing, paintings like her other mouth, which brings in all the scenery she has seen, the music she has listened to, and the people she has loved. These animals, which seem to be sad and happy, seem to be completing a self-conversation and practice. Shi Gaoqing felt “The things you see are actually me.”
From the beginning of memory, Shi Gaoqing’s mother would often bring home all kinds of animals, such as dogs, cats, rabbits, tortoises, pigeons, etc., these small animals grew up with her childhood. What impressed her most was a mixed white Persian cat named “Golden Phoenix”. She had never groomed herself before; but she hid in a utility room door to clean up after another cat “Blue Dragon”, a black and white cat, came to home and since then “Golden Phoenix” embarked on the road of beauty. The two cats petted each other. Look, the love among animals is envious.
Why choose painting?
There are many ways to tell a story: language, music, dance, etc. Shi Gaoqing feels that painting is more powerful than words. Because it is a language without borders, paint is like a human being, and it also has its own life. When it is provoked by the slender end of the oil paint brush, the addition and subtraction from it will collide with various chemical reactions in order to reveal their hidden charm. Each painting has a protagonist or supporting role in the story. In one painting, these reset shapes and phases are the inner reflections; the cracks of memories are intertwined into the exclusive space of the soul. Every work that exists is telling a story with a psychedelic color, full of the illusion of time and space rotation- fascinating and practical, what you see is not necessarily true, and what you judge is not necessarily correct. The real scene seen is the disguise of the world. These stories are magnificent and tender, enveloping inner wars of you, him, her, and me. Leave them in her brushstrokes, and we will eventually become an animal loyal to the soul.
Always pursue a better self
In addition to practicing painting skills, Shi Gaoqing, who has been practicing calligraphy, is always considering whether she can combine painting and calligraphy to refine a new texture. She gets up every morning to practice lower-regular script, copying masterpieces such as Wen Zhengming. Apart from meditation and condensing training, she even began to wonder how the “lifting-up and pressing manipulation” in calligraphy could be incorporated into her oil painting creations.
Shi Gaoqing’s works are labeled esthetic and romantic by more people. Even so, she will find the indescribable texture in the landscape paintings paved with oil paintings: send away the tail of youth and climb on a new path of creation. Before, she used animal portrait painting as the main line; after a few years of creation, she now wants to open herself. She makes some dramatic expressions and emotion connections of landscapes and animals. “There are too many stories that can be written in this era, I would like to create by combining animal anthropomorphism with landscape.”
The curator, the director of the Art Theory Teaching and Research Section, Southwest University for Nationalities, and Associate Professor Wang Hong mentioned in the article “Reconstruction of Sight “Lines”: “In Shi Gaoqing’s earlier works, the imitation of ‘humanized animals’ is often means some kind of reflection on people themselves. However, in recent works, these animals not only resemble human beings, but are also endowed with more human external characteristics, such as clothing, demeanor, and even some parody of the famous paintings. The imitation of Shi is a step further than the past works. If her past works mainly used communicative gaze to eliminate the hierarchy between humans and animals (striped space), then now she makes some decorations in human society for animals, or lets them imitate the relationship position in famous paintings. It is to further question the concept of identity, which is constantly under impact in reality but still unaware of it in the field of ideology.
The viewer will soon notice that the image of the person has returned. For a while, the shape of the person did not exist in her paintings, but at this time the image of the person appeared in a silhouette-like expression, which is undoubtedly Shi Gaoqing’s re-understanding of the issue of identity-consciousness. Then the image-representation we see forms a comparative relationship with the reality replaced by these representations. It is not so much that we are looking at the animals in the paintings as we are looking at ourselves and the society we live in through them; but the relationship between the two aspects is so harmonious that although this separation exists, it is often forgotten by the viewer intentionally.”
During Shi Gaoqing’s transition period, there are multiple clues in her paintings, which need to be summarized; but the broader vision she showed in her works is impressive. You must know that the combination of animal landscape and characters is definitely not a whim.
